Travel Gear

The best advice for Travel Gear is to pack light. Don't take too much with you. Carry things you actually need - versus what you 'think' you actually need and/or want to bring. Before you travel, put everything you want in your bag of choice, than carry that bag for a day around your normal activity - you will soon be reconsidering what you want to bring with you. Pack for where you are going, when you are going and with safety and comfort in mind.

Short Story: Many years ago, arooka was preparing for a month long journey. A tent had to be choosen for living outside - the cheapest tent was choosen. For 28 days out of the 32 days of the journey, it rained and poor arooka lived in misery. The next journey, had the best tent arooka could buy, and the comfort level was outstanding and long lasting. Learn: Don't be cheap. Get high quality equipment.

City

City Travel is the easiest type of travel as the commodites which you use daily are avaliable for purchase. Shelter, Food, and personal hygenie products are readily avaliable - so this means that you don't have to pack these things. Of course if you have items which you prefer to use, then it is up to if you want to carry them. If you have luggage with wheels, floor surfaces are typically coated in cement or other materials to render them flat, means that travel can be fairly easy.
Still pack light. You will still encounter obstacles, such as stairs. You will need to keep an eye on your stuff more, as there is the possibility for thieves to wheel-away your material pocessions.

Country

Country travel can be challenging at times. You will need to consider your shelter type - such as cottage, tent, bivi or something made on location. You typically will need to carry your own food, all the tools to prepare the food and even the tools for preparing fuel (if burning wood), even will have to consider your washroom experiences, where to get water and a host of medical issues.
Still pack light. Try to limit your amount of equipment - but also include special items to make the travel comfortable and enjoyable.

Story: After three weeks deep in canadian wilderness, a plane did a food drop, so that pack food could be replenished - oatmeal, dry noodles, the standard cuisine. Months before the drop, arooka found 2lbs of space, so Arooka packed in a care package of UHT milk, milk chocolate and dehydrated ice cream.
How delicious, how happy!

Medical
A basic part of travel is medical needs.
Going to foreign countries introduces a whole range of problems to the body
New environments require changes in how you do even the most basic things.
For example in Canada during Winter: -45'C and dry
In China during summer: 45'C and 90% humidity

Note:
Arooka has extensive Survival Training and Travel Experience in very remote areas
Arooka has completed first aid certification (expired), mountain rescue certification (expired)
Arooka is open minded to new ideas in medical treatment(traditional, modern and cutting edge)
*If you do not have any training, consider getting training before venturing outdoors*

For these different kits, Arooka normally combines them for longer trips -
but as the length shortens, have to be more practical
( can't be carrying 10lbs of medical equipment just for a short duration trip).

Security
Security comes in different flavours.

The most simple form of security is the way that you behave.
1. Ettiqute - Consider the 'Maxims of Ptahhotep' - be truthful, have self-control and kindness towards others.
2. You are a guest. - You don't have the right to be there, you are a guest.
3. You represent where you came from. - In some places you go, they may never meet anyone from where you are from - make a good impression!
4. Be positive - See the good things in the environment and people.
"While there are language and cultural and social differences between countries – many things are the same in China as it is outside of China. There are cars in China, there are buildings in China, there are trees, there are mammals, there is coca-cola and pepsi, McDonald’s and KFC, Disney and Hello Kitty. While some things are different, many things are the same."

Protection from Criminal Activities
Use 'Common Sense'.
1. Don't do criminal activity. - If it is illegal where you are from, it is likely illegal where you are too.
2. Don't 'party' or utilize 'dirty' services. - You are just opening the door to allow people to take advantage of you.
3. Don't put yourself in a postion where you need to defend yourself.
4. Pay attention: Your instincts, other people, your surroundings. Look for the unusual.
5. Be Confident and Focused. - If you look meek or dazed, you could be a target.
6. Understand 'Disparity of Wealth' - Don't show off what you have.
7. Don't lend people your electronic equipment.
8. Don’t accept offers to go out with people you are not familiar with.
9. Don't give money to beggars.
"Note on Begging: It is natural reaction to want to help some less fortunate than yourself, especially if you are brought up in an environment which promotes those virtues – however in China, what you see, may not be actually real. I recall watching a boy, about the age of six and an old woman actually being coached by a man in his thirties on how to move and act in order to entice people in order to give them money. Have even seen fake monks driving a BMW talking on a new Iphone, while their counter parts stand outside a real temple requesting money for ‘holy objects’."

Electronics

Camera

Bring only what you really need. Some people really need their phone. Some need a laptop.
The more you pack, the more potential problems exist.
Make sure to take all the required cables, power cords, battery charges, etc.
Make sure you have the proper voltage and amps for the place you are going - or get a transformer.

It is recommended to pack some fun.
This can be fun things for other people - such as a unique form of food or balloons.
Pack something to help with any boredom you may come across - perhaps a pad of paper and a pen - a book or some playing cards.
